Wardrobe size, configuration, and material all affect how long the piece lasts. Here is what to consider before buying a wardrobe in Accra — from a showroom that stocks both.
The wardrobe is the most structurally demanding piece in any bedroom. Doors, hinges, internal shelving, and the main carcass all need to hold up to daily use over 15+ years. In Ghana's climate, with temperature fluctuations and humidity, this is particularly demanding.
5-door vs 6-door: what actually changes
The most common question we hear in our showroom is whether to choose a 5-door or 6-door wardrobe. The answer depends on room width and storage needs, not aesthetics.
A 5-door wardrobe typically measures 220–240cm wide. It fits in most master bedrooms and provides excellent storage for a single person or couple who organise clothing by type. A 6-door wardrobe runs 270–300cm wide and requires a room with at least 3m of clear wall space. The additional door section provides meaningful extra storage — particularly useful for households with children's clothing stored alongside adult wear.
Interior configuration matters more than door count
Look inside the wardrobe before you decide. A quality wardrobe interior should include: a hanging rail at least 60cm deep (for hung garments to clear the back), adjustable shelving (so you can reconfigure as needs change), and a dedicated drawer module for folded items. Budget wardrobes often skip adjustable shelving, which means the configuration that ships is the configuration you live with.
Material: what holds up in Ghana's climate
The best wardrobe materials for Ghana's climate are heat-pressed laminate over high-density engineered wood. This combination resists humidity-related warping significantly better than solid wood veneers or paper-wrapped MDF. All wardrobes in the Exen Furniture range use European-grade board with sealed edges to prevent moisture ingress.
Hinges and handles: the hidden quality indicators
Open every door in the showroom before buying. Quality hinges (Blum or equivalent) operate with zero wobble and adjust to correct minor door misalignment without tools. Cheap hinges develop play within months. Check that door handles are solid — hollow handles feel noticeably different from solid metal and are a sign of cost-cutting throughout the piece.
Delivery and fitting considerations
Wardrobes are the most complex pieces to deliver. Confirm: does the delivery team assemble on-site? Do they carry the pieces upstairs if required? At Exen Furniture, delivery and full in-home assembly is included in the price across Greater Accra and Tema.
