Turkish Furniture vs. Chinese Imports: What's the Real Difference?

Many furniture buyers in Ghana have experienced the disappointment of cheap imports that deteriorate within years. We explain why Turkish manufacturing represents a genuinely different standard.

This is a question we get asked frequently in our showroom: "What makes Turkish furniture actually different from what I can buy cheaper?"

It is a fair question. And the honest answer is: quite a lot — but only if you know what to look for.

The manufacturing context

China produces furniture for every market — from ultra-cheap flat-pack to high-end pieces for luxury brands. The problem in Ghana is that what arrives here is overwhelmingly from the budget segment of Chinese production, because that is what the price point allows for importers.

Turkey, by contrast, has spent 30 years building a manufacturing sector specifically oriented toward European quality standards. Turkish factories supply IKEA, H&M Home, and hundreds of European furniture retailers. The baseline quality expectation is simply higher.

What you can actually see and feel

The differences are visible once you know what to look for. Check the corner joints on a wardrobe door — Turkish-manufactured pieces use precision-cut dovetail or dowel joints with minimal gaps. Budget Chinese imports often use staples or cheap cam locks.

Check the drawer slides. Turkish bedroom sets use full-extension soft-close drawer mechanisms. Budget alternatives use basic metal channels that become noisy and loose within months.

Check the back panel of a wardrobe. Turkish pieces use 12mm panels. Cheap imports often use 3-5mm cardboard-like backing that bends under light pressure.

The climate question

Ghana's climate is the ultimate test for furniture. The combination of humidity and heat degrades furniture through warping, delamination, and joint loosening. Turkish manufacturers use wood that is kiln-dried to specific moisture content levels and sealed with heat-pressed laminates. This is not the case for budget imports.

The honest price calculation

A Turkish bedroom set from Exen Furniture at GHS 15,000 will likely still look good in 15 years. A cheap imported set at GHS 5,000 will likely need replacing within 5 years. The maths is not complicated — but the upfront cost is a real consideration for many buyers.

We are transparent about this: Turkish furniture is not the cheapest option in Accra. But it is the best value over the lifetime of the piece.
