Wood furniture requires specific care in West Africa's humid, warm climate. This guide covers maintenance routines that will keep your furniture looking new for decades.
Premium Turkish furniture is built to last — but like any quality product, it rewards good care. Ghana's climate presents specific challenges: humidity, heat, dust, and occasional heavy rain that raises indoor moisture levels.
Daily care
Dust wood surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth. Never use wet cloths on wood surfaces unless you immediately dry them. For upholstered pieces, vacuum weekly — Ghana's dust levels are significant, and dust embedded in fabric accelerates wear.
Protecting wood surfaces
Direct sunlight is the enemy of wood furniture. Even in homes with air conditioning, the UV light that comes through windows will fade and dry out wood surfaces over time. Use curtains or blinds to minimise direct sun exposure on furniture.
Avoid placing drinks directly on wood surfaces — use coasters. The ring marks left by cold drinks in a humid climate are permanent.
Managing humidity
Air conditioning is your furniture's best friend. It not only keeps the room comfortable but reduces humidity. If you have AC, run it regularly — not just when you are home. Consistent humidity levels prevent the wood expansion and contraction that causes joints to loosen.
In rooms without AC, a dehumidifier is worth considering for protecting premium furniture.
Cleaning upholstery
For fabric sofas, use a clean dry cloth for spills — blot, never rub. For leather pieces, use a damp cloth followed immediately by a dry one, and apply a leather conditioner every 6 months.
Annual maintenance
Once a year, check all visible screws and bolts on furniture and tighten any that have loosened. For wood surfaces, apply a furniture polish or beeswax product to nourish and protect the finish.
