Choosing the Perfect Dining Table: Size, Shape and Material

The dining table is where family gathers. Here is everything you need to know to choose the right size, shape, and material for your dining space.

The dining table is one of the most used pieces of furniture in a Ghanaian home. It hosts family dinners, homework sessions, meetings, and celebrations. Choosing the right one requires thinking about how you actually live — not just how you want to live.

Getting the size right

The rule is simple: allow 60cm of table width per person seated. A 4-seater table needs to be at least 240cm wide if seating 4 on the long sides, or 90cm wide if using all 4 sides. Always measure your room and allow at least 90cm of clearance on all sides of the table for comfortable chair movement.

Round vs. Rectangular

Round tables are more sociable — there is no head of the table, and conversation flows more naturally. They also fit better in square rooms. But they seat fewer people than an equivalent rectangular table.

Rectangular tables are more versatile for seating numbers and fit better in longer, narrower rooms. Most Ghanaian dining rooms are better served by a rectangular table.

Extendable tables

If your household varies between 4 and 8 people regularly, an extendable dining table is almost always the right choice. Turkish manufacturers produce excellent extendable mechanisms that operate smoothly and hold their alignment over years of use.

Material choices

Solid wood tables are the premium choice — they can be resurfaced if scratched and last for generations. Glass-topped tables look elegant but show every mark. Engineered wood with a laminate surface is practical and durable — and what most of our dining range uses.

Chairs

Buy dining chairs from the same collection as your table. Mixing eras and styles in dining furniture rarely works as well as it does in living rooms. The height relationship between chair seat and table top is also critical — aim for 25-30cm between seat height and tabletop.
